Flying an aircraft, whether by a novice or experienced pilot, relies on a complex combination of technical skills, judgment, and coordination. Among the most common errors made by pilots, the following can be identified:
1. Loss of situational awareness
- Definition: Not being fully aware of the aircraft's state, weather, position, or trajectory.
- Causes: Fatigue, distraction, or workload overload.
- Consequences: This can lead to errors such as inadvertently entering a wrong trajectory or neglecting a critical parameter.
2. Poor energy management (speed, altitude, power)
- Definition: Improperly managing speed, altitude, or engine power.
- Example: Engine stalls due to insufficient speed during an approach or a stall.
- Consequences: Risk of stalling or forced landing.
3. Errors in instrument interpretation or use
- Definition: Incorrectly reading instruments or not using the correct assistance systems.
- Causes: Lack of training or high stress.
- Example: Confusion between the artificial horizon and the altimeter.
4. Inappropriate decisions in weather conditions
- Definition: Underestimating or ignoring weather hazards (such as flying VFR in IFR conditions).
- Consequences: Spatial disorientation or loss of aircraft control.
5. Lack of communication
- Definition: Ineffective communication with air traffic control or a co-pilot.

7. Overconfidence or lack of preparation

- Example: Taking off or landing on an unsuitable runway without prior calculations.
To reduce these errors, pilots receive continuous training, simulators allow them to practice critical situations, and automated systems (such as ground proximity warning systems or autopilots) complement their vigilance. However, the human factor remains a key element of aviation safety.
